Have Fun On The Water In Sitges!

With miles of coastline, including 17 beautiful sandy beaches and two marinas, and a warm sea, Sitges is a superb location for a range of water based sports and activities.  Whether you want to lazily float on a gentle current or power through the waves at high speed, an ocean of watery fun in the sun awaits in beautiful Sitges.

Swimming is by far the most popular water activity here, and with a favourable annual climate, sea swimming is possible for most of the year. Sea water temperatures in Sitges are highest in August with an average of 25.4 degrees, but still averages as high as 22 degrees in October. If you are planning any sea based activities from December through to March a wet suite will be necessary. Each of the beaches has its own character: there are family beaches, nudist beaches and gay beaches.

La Fragata Beach is the most central beach and is very popular with families. Some of the beaches have been awarded blue flag status for their water quality, cleanliness and safety.  Bring a snorkel and mask with you to check out the aquatic life living around the rocky breakwaters. Visibility is generally quite good here.

During the busy summer months, the beaches closer to the town centre attract the biggest crowds.  While you can always find a pleasant spot to roll out your towel and pitch your umbrella, you will discover gradually more room the further you move away from the centre. The least crowded beaches are those nearest to the Terramar Hotel at the west end of Sitges seafront or those to the East past San Sebastian and either side of Auiguadolc marina.

In addition to sea swimming, many hotels and villas have their own swimming pools and there are also municipal pools and swimming clubs in the town.  So, if you happen to be here during a spell of inclement weather, you will always be able to find somewhere to enjoy a leisurely dip in the water.

Fun at Full Throttle

For those who like to go full throttle at sea, hire a jet-ski for some adrenalin-fuelled fun.  There is a handful of shops and centres where jet skis can be hired, and they are located in the centre of Sitges and at the town’s main ports of Aiguadolc and Port de Garraf.  Riding on the speedy craft is also a great way to check out the local scenery.

You can also experience the Mediterranean by being strapped onto a pair of water skis.  Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that you won’t want to stop.

Aigiadolce port is a good place to go for a number of aquatic pursuits, including wind surfing and kite surfing.  Novices are welcome to have a try.  Kitesurfing is growing in popularity and is a thrilling combination of wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing and paragliding.  Standing on a board, you are propelled across the water when the large power kite under your control catches the wind. One of the coolest new water based activities is Flyboarding where you hover above the sea suspended on water jets.

Lazy Days at Sea

Aigiadolce is also where you can charter a boat to enjoy a leisurely cruise out to sea or along the coastline.  Spend an unforgettable day on the water with family and friends as you soak up life on the ocean wave.  Drop anchor and dive in for a delightful swim, then climb back on board for some refreshments as you look over at the Sitges coastline.

If you are new to sailing and yachting, book courses and lessons at the marina. Skilled and certified instructors will teach you how to sail in a safe and controlled environment.  Sitges also has a small, but thriving surf community.  Some of the best waves can be found at the beaches near the port.

Peddle Power

Even if adventure is not your middle name, but you long to do something more than swimming in the sea, make use of the pedalo boats that are for hire at many beaches. They are great fun for children and make perfect platforms for diving or snorkelling.

Away from the sea, there is more excitement in the water at AquaLeon Water Park and Zoo.  Cool off in the heat and thrill to some heart-stopping fun on the water rollercoaster, water slides, tubes, wave pool and rapid river.
