The Barcelona To Sitges International Vintage Car Rally
In March every year devoted car junkies head to Catalunya for the Barcelona to Sitges International Vintage Car Rally.
Born in 1959, the Barcelona-Sitges International Vintage Car Rally features only those privately owned vehicles manufactured prior to 1924. Cars produced after 1924 are not allowed to participate in the rally.
Organised by the Tourism Promotion of Sitges, with support from several other local agencies, the Barcelona-Sitges International Vintage Car Rally has been sponsored by Audi for the last eighteen years. The car company also contributes a small fleet for the rally each year.
This car rally is much more than a car show; it is a rally with spirit. The competition focuses not only on those cars that reach Sitges the quickest, but also on those vehicles that are most original, with owners who dress for the period relevant to the time in which the car was initially introduced to the world. The winner will receive the ‘Elegance Grand Prix’ award.
Approximately 70 vintage cars race along the 45 kilometre scenic and winding seaside road, starting at Barcelona’s Placa de Sant Jaume and finishing at Port d’Aiguadolc in the seaside resort town of Sitges.
Spectators typically plant themselves with a picnic and a good bottle of wine along the rally route where they can watch as the competing cars pass along.
The Barcelona-Sitges International Vintage Car Rally takes place every March, usually beginning at around 11.00 a.m. The rally cars are displayed at L’Illa Shopping Centre before the rally and at La Plaza de la Fragata de Sitges after the event.
