Sitges emerges as Catalonia’s beach resort with the most Blue Flag beach awards
Sitges has solidified its position as the premier beach destination in the region by receiving the esteemed Blue Flag distinction for nine of its stunning beaches, more than any other municipality in Catalonia. The internationally recognised Blue Flag award is a testament to the exceptional quality and services offered by these coastal gems.
The nine beaches in Sitges that have earned the coveted Blue Flag status are Les Botigues, Poble de Garraf, Aiguadolç, Balmins, Sant Sebastià, La Ribera, L’Estanyol, La Barra, and Terramar.
The Blue Flag distinction is globally acknowledged as one of the most prestigious accolades for beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators. Attaining the Blue Flag requires meeting and maintaining stringent criteria related to environmental sustainability, educational initiatives, safety measures, and accessibility provisions. The International Blue Flag Jury 2022, under the auspices of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), bestows this esteemed recognition.
Sitges has emerged as the unrivaled leader in Catalonia when it comes to earning these prestigious distinctions. This year, Catalonia as a whole has been honored with a total of 96 Blue Flags for its remarkable beaches, an increase of two compared to the previous year. Additionally, the region’s ports have been recognised with 24 Blue Flags, an increase of one compared to the previous period.
With its nine Blue Flag beaches and exceptional commitment to sustainability, Sitges stands tall as Catalonia’s crown jewel in terms of beach excellence. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of these coastal treasures while enjoying the highest standards of water quality and services.
