The History of Sitges

Sitges’ rich history is most commonly associated with its bohemian artistic roots from the 1800s.

However, many archaeological finds in the region show presence of human habitation dating back to the 1st century BC during the Neolithic era.  These early Sitges inhabitants lived in two separate villages which were later taken over by the Romans.  During that time Sitges became an important port for trading products across the Roman Mediterranean.

La Punta Hill, where the city’s Town Hall stands, was previously the medieval castle and home of the Bishopric of Barcelona.  It was later home to the Sitges family who ruled over the town until the 14th century, and then sold to Bernat de Fonollar – a knight who was linked to the court of King James II.

With its many vineyards, Sitges’ economy grew predominately from wine making as well as agriculture and fishing.  Many Sitges locals flocked to America in the 18th century to seek their fortune as it became an increasingly important commerce centre.  When they returned, they brought with them new cultural customs that saw Sitges become a more prosperous and cosmopolitan city in the 19th century.

In fact, it was around this time that Sitges became an important culture centre.  Many painters, artists, sculptors and writers all made Sitges their home and were responsible for the spreading of Modermisme (Catalan Modernism).  Today Sitges’ cultural roots are still very much apparent with regular festivals celebrated throughout the year, along with its many museums, galleries and public art all displayed around the city.
